This rocking horse has a red bandana around his neck and spurs hanging down from his saddle!  Just like a real horse, our staff heard more than one child exclaim. Henry the Horse also makes noises when children pull at either of his ears.  The looks on their faces when they squeeze his ear and horse sounds spring forth – the children are gleeful!  Squeezing one of Henry’s ears will make neighing sounds and galloping noises occur for more than 10 seconds.  As might be imagined, children squeeze over and over, and over, again to hear the noises.  They are delighted.  The other ear makes faster neighing noises.  Henry’s mouth moves, too, when his ears get squeezed and his tail wags.  There is so much activity surrounding this plush rocking horse that children remain entertained for some time.

KidKraft Henry the Horse relies on a solid wooden base to provide a sturdy foundation for all the rocking motion that is to come when children climb aboard.  The saddle is made of leather-like quality and fastens around the horse just like the real ones.  Our staff reports that assembling Henry is quick and painless.  The toy takes three “AA” batteries which are not included at the time of purchase.

Henry is recommended for children ages three and up.  As usual during our testing sessions, we have children who are slightly younger and slightly older than the minimum age recommended.  Almost always, the older children enjoy the rocking horse, too.  Those children under the age of three can also enjoy the toy, depending on their nearness to the recommended age and the height and developmental abilities.  As always, and even more important with younger children, adult supervision is a must, especially around a new toy.  Remember, the recommended ages from the manufacturer are a guideline.

Our staff wants to ensure that all purchasers know, however, that prior to assembly, children under the age of 3 should not be allowed around the unassembled pieces.  There are small parts that could present a choking hazard.  Once put together, it is very safe and secure for toddlers.  The hand holds and foot holds are provided by pegs in the wooden horse at just the right angle and level for little ones’ hands and feet.  They are also sized large enough to enable a child to get an easy grip.

Kids in our testing session seemed to love the circular design shape, running their hands across the smooth wood.  They also really liked the red foam saddle which added a touch of reality (a real saddle!) along with an extra lit bit of comfort as they rode the “horsey” around.

Primary colors are always attractive and conducive to learning for toddlers, and the Plan Toy Palomino has vivid red, yellow, and blue colors, along with the natural color of the wood.  The hand holds and foot rests are easily spotted and used by children.  They had no problems at all scrambling aboard and taking off for the far horizons!

The mother put her on the rocking horse and, holding her steady, let her rock back and forth. The little one was enthralled. Several children younger than 3 years were able to maneuver safely onto the wooden horse and enjoyed riding the “horsey!” Adult supervision is absolutely a must for younger children, but they do enjoy the horse as well. One mother, who had been through the testing program before, said she actually believed a solid, stable rocking horse could actually help her child’s ability to learn to climb.

The KidKraft Rocking Horse is one of the best toys around, our staff and test participants believe. The materials are of excellent quality and there are no sharp edges anywhere on the horse. It is strong enough that an average-sized adult can sit on it for a brief time. Specifications state it can hold up to 80 pounds, but it has been known to hold up to 150 pounds.

During assembly, it is recommended to keep all children under the age of 3 years away from the assembly area as there are some small parts that could become a choking hazard. Staffers report that putting this rocking horse together was quite easy and the feat can be accomplished even by those who are not master engineers.

They are toys that almost all kids love. Children love horses, and the next best thing to having and riding your own horse is a wooden one. A suggestion was made during the testing of this toy that to enable smaller children to climb up easier, a pillow could be added to step on. As well, a soft mat or putting the rocking horse on a carpeted area will help ensure a soft landing if a little one happens to get a foot caught getting astride the horse. Although no difficulties of this kind were observed, you can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of your child.

The only tool you’ll need is a Phillips screwdriver and just about 25 minutes. The design of the runners seem to be a good choice as, when watching how fast some children can get the horse to rocking, observers can tell what a difference the length of the runners makes to avoid tip-overs.

Many parents felt that the choice not to include a bridle rope on the Stork Craft Rocking Horse was a good decision as it gives the child no alternative to holding on to the bars on the horse’s head to stabilize. When a bridle rope is offered, some children may decide to try to hold onto that as opposed to the handholds on either side of the rocking horse’s head.
